Abstract

This study aims to explore social media consumption behavior among adolescents and how these interactions shape their understanding of Islamic teachings. In the digital era, social media has transformed into one of the primary sources of religious information for the younger generation, shifting the role of traditional authorities. This study utilizes a qualitative approach with a case study method, involving active adolescent users of platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube in SMP Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiyyah Kota Cirebon. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation of digital behavior. The results indicate that adolescents' social media consumption behavior tends to be passive-consumptive, where platform algorithms dominate the religious content they receive rather than active searching. The resulting religious understanding tends to be fragmentary, textual, and prioritizes visual and emotional content over in-depth study. While social media facilitates access to diverse interpretations, it also poses vulnerability to shallow or extreme religious narratives if not accompanied by adequate digital and religious literacy. This study concludes the need for traditional religious authorities to produce engaging yet substantial content.
