Abstract

This study aims to analyze the practice of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) within Malay society as a socio-cultural system integrated with local cultural values while facing the challenges of modernization. A qualitative approach utilizing a literature review method was employed, examining various scholarly sources such as journals, books, and recent research articles. Data analysis was conducted through content analysis, involving the categorization, comparison, and synthesis of findings from the literature. The results specifically indicate that PAI practices in Malay society operate across three primary realms the family, formal educational institutions, and the community which are mutually integrated in the process of internalizing Islamic values. This integration is reinforced by the philosophy of "custom anchored in Sharia, and Sharia anchored in the Book of Allah" (adat bersendi syarak, syarak bersendi Kitabullah), which serves as a normative foundation for character formation and cultural identity. Furthermore, the study finds that the effectiveness of PAI practices is heavily influenced by the family's role as the primary educational base, while formal institutions and the community act as reinforcing agents. However, the effectiveness of these practices has declined due to the pressures of globalization, technological advancements, and the weakening of the family's educational function. Consequently, strategies are needed to strengthen PAI by integrating the roles of these three educational environments and implementing instructional innovations grounded in both technology and local culture, ensuring the subject remains relevant in the modern era.
