The Idealism of Character and Moral Education in Islamic Religious Education for Gen Z in the 21st-Century Digital Era

Abstract

This study focuses on exploring ideal concepts regarding character and moral development in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) aimed at Generation Z in the 21st-century age. The approach used is an exposition that utilizes library learning. Analysis was conducted on primary materials such as the Qur’an and hadith, as well as documents related to education, supplemented by supporting sources from scientific journals and previous research. The study’s conclusions reveal that character education in PAI is based on the principles of Islamic ethics, aiming to cultivate well-rounded individuals who maintain a balance between spiritual, intellectual, and moral dimensions. However, the implementation of this education faces significant obstacles due to the nature of Generation Z, which tends to prefer digital, instant, and visual content. Furthermore, the negative impact of social media has the potential to lead to moral decline. Thus, learning strategies that are adaptable, creative, and rooted in noble values are needed to instill character effectively. Success in character education is evident in shifts in students’ attitudes, actions, and habits in their daily lives extending beyond cognitive understanding to encompass emotional aspects and practical skills.
